The complex of [Ru(azpy)2bpy](PF6)2 (azpy = 2-(phenylazo)pyridine, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) was synthesized by reaction between α-[Ru(azpy)2Cl2] and 2,2'-bipyridine in water-ethanol mixture. The characterization of this complex was studied by FAB-mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the X-ray crystal structure of the complex was also determined. The coordination geometry of ruthenium(II) was distorted octhahedral with coordinating from two N-donor atoms of bpy and four N-donor atoms of two azpy units. The Ru-N(pyridine) bonds of bpy were longer than the Ru-N(pyridine) distances in azpy. In this complex the N-N distances of azpy igands were slightly longer than that of the free azpy ligand.
